First signs of Spring & Snowdrop embroidery

snowdrop embroidery

Don't you just love this time of the year, when you can finally start looking out for the first signs of spring?  Today, I bring you new inspiration for our embroideries, the very first blooms - snowdrops! They have first appeared in January and now, at almost mid February, more and more have bloomed.

Snowdrops and more snowdrops, from tiny few cms, up to proud 40-50cms. We followed specifically designed paths, as well as wandered out on our own. They were all around Anglesey Abbey, which is famous for it's snowdrop collection of more then 500 varieties.

Even though they were of the same colour, depending on whether they were in the sun or shade, you could interpret them in different ways. I imagined stitching the outer leaves with a darker shade of green and the insides lighter. The heads were definitely white, with a pop of green on the inside.

There were lots of daffodils too, although their prime time will come in the next few weeks. If you would like to have a go at a daffodil project, have a look at my daffodil embroidery tutorial here and blog post here.  Apart from the tutorial, it includes an inspiration from the Daffodil Festival in Thriplow, a quintessential English village, dressed in daffodils for the occasion, with all locals participating, creating a very special and unique event.

Now onto our snowdrop design. It is a very simple one, with beautiful effect - a simple bouquet of three snowdrops and leaves in various blooming stages.

The stitches used:
• petals (called tepals) - long and short, and satin stitches
• leaves (+ top of the heads) - satin stitch
• stems - stem stitch (+ satin stitch at the top.

I used DMC Pearl Cotton in size 8, in multi green No 94, as well as DMC stranded cotton (3 strands) in white and dark green No 936.

The design itself, is easy for beginners and can be applied on various of projects. You can also increase or decrease the percentage on your printer to adjust the size to your liking. For my project, I have cut enough fabric to make a small drawstring pouch, which I will show in a future video.
